Experience
I have over 10 years experience with using languages professionally, during which time I have worked both in-house and freelance, lived in France and Spain, and travelled to over 30 countries.

Qualifications
I have an MA in Translation (with Distinction), a BA in Modern Languages and Cultures and a C1 Diploma in Advanced French (Diplôme approfondi de langue française).

I have also completed the Basic Proofreading course offered by the Publishing Training Centre, one of only two industry-recognised publishing qualification providers in the UK.

Native English
Born and bred in the UK, I can provide accurate, effective English, perfectly adapted to your audience.

Software
I use industry-standard software, working primarily with SDL Trados Studio 2022. I have received certification for SDL Trados Studio, SDL Multiterm and Post Editing – see my certification page here.

Quality
I am a member of the UK Chartered Institute of Translators. I only accept assignments for which I can guarantee high quality. I thoroughly research and work closely with you to guarantee fidelity to the original language and intention, asking questions for clarification where needed. I use computer quality assurance tools and thoroughly proofread my work before delivery.

Confidentiality
Your information is not shared with anyone else, so you won’t have to worry about your documents being sent to anonymous translators.

Insurance
I have professional indemnity insurance to give you further peace of mind.

I typically translate from 2,000 to 4,000 words per day, and my basic rates are competitive, but both depend on the subject matter, format and complexity, as well as my availability. We’ll discuss your requirements and I’ll provide a full breakdown of costs and timescales on my quote.

Like most professional translators, I believe that target language natives are usually most effective in conveying the meaning, intention, and style of the original text to the target audience. However, if you need any other language combination, I’ll be happy to recommend a trusted professional colleague who meets your requirements.

I started studying French, Spanish and Italian over 20 years ago. My knowledge of Spanish allowed me to learn Portuguese very quickly on the job in 2010. Catalan is a relatively new addition to my repertoire, but it shares many features with those mentioned. The key is that all of these languages are in the Western Romance family, which means that all share common vocabulary, grammatical structures, etc. However, while this has sped up my learning, I pay careful attention to “false friends” and different shades of meaning when translating.

While many translators offer the option of having their translations proofread for an additional cost, in my experience this may actually lead to a worse final product. Proofreaders are often tempted to make changes based on taste and personal preference, resulting in an inconsistent style, and may even introduce errors of their own.

Working with me alone ensures consistency, accountability, speed, quality, and a fair price, with no hassle or time-wasting.
