Investigative ecological journalism often falls into the trap of 'gist' reporting – summarising conflict without examining the underlying structural and financial mechanisms.

In my work translating these reports for Mongabay, my priority was to preserve the technical precision of territorial disputes. These are not just stories about nature; they are legal audits of how land is managed, governed, and enclosed.

• Institutional Meltdown (Easter Island): I translated this investigation into the fiscal rift in park management, ensuring that the complex accounting terminology regarding the transition from state to local oversight was rendered accurately.
• The Regulatory Gap (Peru): This translation required navigating the specific legal definitions of marine zoning to highlight the bureaucratic barriers preventing the establishment of sanctuaries.
• Community Agency (Madagascar): Translating the tension between high-stakes mining operations and community biodiversity groups, prioritizing local technical knowledge over external imposition.

Why This Matters

For the Social and Solidarity Economy (SSE), these texts provide a technical blueprint for territorial sovereignty. By maintaining structural fidelity in translation, I ensure the distinction between 'management' and 'governance' is clear – a distinction that often determines whether a conservation project empowers or encloses a community.
